VHS to Digital Case Study in Boalsburg, PA

Gwen from Boalsburg, PA recently helped her family preserve a piece of their past by converting a collection of old VHS tapes to digital format. At the request of her mother, she worked with VHS to Digital PA to organize and digitize footage that documented childhood milestones from the late 1980s through 1994.

The 13-tape collection was a time capsule of family life—featuring school plays, choir concerts, band performances, and dance recitals held in a local studio. Together, these recordings captured the energy and innocence of youth in a way that only VHS could back in the day.

Gwen’s project qualified for the most affordable pricing tier, which applies to orders of 10 or more tapes. This meant she was charged just $0.18 per minute, with a maximum of $18 per tape and a minimum of $4 per tape. Before that per-minute pricing kicks in, all clients pay a $25 base fee that covers setup, file prep, and file organization.

And when it comes to content, clients get what they pay for.

Some tapes in Gwen’s collection were quite short—8, 13, and 17 minutes—so they met the $4 minimum. Others ran longer, like a 33-minute choir recital, 65-minute band stage show, and one 116-minute musical performance, which maxed out at the $18 cap. Even with varying lengths, every tape was handled with care and priced fairly.

Gwen’s total per-minute transfer cost came to $113.40, and when paired with the $25 base fee, her full project total was $138.40. The average cost per tape came out to $10.65, with a median cost per tape of $6.60—a small price to pay for safeguarding a family’s irreplaceable history.

From proud marching band appearances to early-stage theater performances, each moment was brought back to life in full color and sound. And really—what parent wouldn’t want to see their children in their most glorious, innocent years?

For anyone with a stack of old VHS tapes sitting in a box, Gwen’s story is a reminder: you don’t have to let those memories fade. VHS to Digital PA makes it easy, affordable, and meaningful to preserve the past—one tape at a time.
